In the midst of absolute, worldwide insanity with the setting up of the New World Order by world leaders, Noahide Laws, the Abraham Accord, a new prime minister in Israel (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/middle_east/netanyahu-out-israel-prime-minister/2021/06/13/eaac2738-c9e8-11eb-8708-64991f2acf28_story.html), wars and rumors of wars, plandemics, impending food shortages, famine, and economic upheaval caused by storms, locusts, and man; attacks on Israel from outside and within (from Gaza to vaccine intimidation: “‘We Won’t Force Vaccine; But Here’s What We Will Do’,”
https://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/292039?fbclid=IwAR3RzrUrsMEIknUXnMLZHJFUWknTJriu_2pk7U9REOk4yJA1jGil-Cn6zL0 ); to increased persecution of Christians in nation after nation including Canada https://holylight4u.wordpress.com/2021/02/22/persecution-pastor-imprisoned-in-canada/, the possibility of mandatory vaccinations https://holylight4u.wordpress.com/watchman-on-the-wall/, https://www.foxnews.com/us/more-than-170-houston-hospital-workers-suspended-over-refusing-vaccine), and the feeling that the 4 horses of Revelation are in the starting gate of the Tribulation https://holylight4u.wordpress.com/the-4-horses/, while all of this is unfolding and the world races headlong toward the cliff of Jacob’s Trouble and the Great Tribulation of Revelation, the Holy Spirit is still moving! Though it may not seem like it in your area, I want to encourage you with the undeniable fact that God is at work among His people — after all, isn’t He at work in you?

In the book of Acts we recount that as the Holy Spirit was being poured out and people were being saved day by day, persecution also rose more dramatically. While signs and wonders were everywhere present, so too was persecution. As the Spirit empowered the believers, the enemy arose against them like a flood. But, the more the enemy attacked, the more Christianity grew. The more persecution increased, the more lives were impacted by the incredible, power-packed message of the Gospel. The greater the pressure, the greater the salvations. Even so, against all odds, the Holy Spirit was poured out on all flesh and the Gospel spread in a steady blaze around the world.

What about now? What about today?

Acts 2 states, “17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:19 And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved… “38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.” (emphasis mine)

Peter said that the Holy Spirit would be poured out in the last days, and that that day of Pentecost of Acts 2 marked the beginning of the last days. If that was the beginning, can we not infer that we are still in the last days and are closer to the end of them than Peter was? Furthermore, the promise is said to be for Peter’s day, for the generation after him, and even those who were “afar off” meaning, all generations that would come after them. That includes us.

What is God saying today?

“There is a sound of an abundance of rain that is coming. This is the move of God that I have promised you that would girdle the entirety of the world; it is touching my people. It is touching my people in Africa. It is touching my people in China. It is touching my people in Australia, South America; this is the move of God that I have promised you. Get ready! Get ready! It’s now. Now is the time. This is the move that will girdle the entirety of the world. And I am coming. And this is why I promised you. And it shall come to pass.” (prophetic utterance at Jimmy Swaggart’s church Family Worship Center, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, November 22, 2020 — https://holylight4u.wordpress.com/for-your-edification/)
“I’m gonna breathe on the embers again, and I will ignite this fire in your spirit saith the Lord. I am moving on my people says God. Humble yourself and look to Me, for I am well-able; I am able to do it. Oh the promise of the Father, the promise of the Spirit, it was given to you at a great price. I am going to baptize scores, says the Lord. You are going to see My work. All I can see is a hand of a man; the cloud, I can see it coming. It’s going to rain; it’s beginning to rain; it’s raining says the Lord. And you will see the great thing that I can do, says God.” (On May 16, 2021 yet another word from the Lord came forth as an encouragement to His people at Family Worship Center, that the rain is coming, the outpouring is coming, and is even here now worldwide — https://holylight4u.wordpress.com/for-your-edification/)

Then today, June 13, 2021, God spoke to His people yet again with a world of prophecy and encouragement saying,

“There is a wave of glory, says the Lord, that’s coming upon my people for the last time before the trumpet sounds. And I am going to heal many, says God. And I am even going to raise some, even those who are feeble and cannot walk. I am going to open the eyes of the blind. I am going to open the deaf ears. I am going to heal those in the hospital rooms, and I am going into the psychiatric floors, and I am going to [?]. I am even going to save those who have deeply sinned, says the Lord. Satan may come in but like a flood I will lift up a mighty standard against him. Hold on, says the Lord, for I am going forth with great and mighty power because of what I did at Calvary. It is your foundation. Hold fast, says the Lord, the trumpet is about to sound.” https://holylight4u.wordpress.com/for-your-edification/

Thus, the Holy Spirit is still being poured out right now on His people around the world — in house after house, nation after nation, prison cell after prison cell, in bedrooms, in woods, in airplanes, caves, and ship cabins from sea to shining sea. This is the move of God. This is the outpouring. There is not another one coming. This is that. After all, He promised to do so in both Joel 2 and Acts 1-2. What He promised in Joel 2 He began to fulfill in Acts 2, and He is still fulfilling it to this day. We are still in the last days, and truly are in the last of the Last Days. IT IS NOT OVER!!! And below are videos to prove this refreshing fact.

And so, I pray, dear Christian reader, that you will not be discouraged. There are those who are standing up. There are those who are not backing down. There are those who are unashamed of the Gospel. There are those preaching on street corners, in arenas, in fields, at work, over the phone; there are those being saved, delivered, set free, baptized in water and being empowered by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is moving and has not stopped; the videos below prove this. I pray they lift your spirit, encourage your heart, edify you through and through, and even fill you with fullness of joy. May you be filled afresh with the Holy Spirit as you watch.

Let us be emboldened. Let us not back down. Let us stand together for Christ without fear of anything, and I mean anything! Let us not be weighted down by anything (Hebrews 12), for we are not alone in this fight! Quit coddling pet sins. Quit giving lame excuses. Quit holding onto to even the good things of this world. Quit thinking about getting away and your next vacation. Quit worrying about the vaccine. Quit focusing on your job. Quit desiring normal — stale, stagnant, lukewarm normal. And let us not hold ourselves back because of any emotional baggage or physical infirmity or financial matter, no matter what it is! Don’t limit God by your limitations! Is He not the One who made you and placed you in the very situation you find yourself now?

That’s right. Your situation is not out of God’s control. You think that the devil can do whatever he wants to whenever he wants to do so? Wrong. Our God still reigns. In John 11 we read, “1 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.2 (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.4 When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.” (emphasis mine) And also in John 9 we read, “1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.” (emphasis mine)

In both of these stories, the situation in which the blind man and Lazarus, Mary and Martha found themselves was exactly where God wanted them to be at the exact time He wanted them to be there. Jesus delayed going to Lazarus. I’ll say that again. Jesus DELAYED. Someone was born blind and lived into adulthood blind and became a beggar. Why? For God’s glory. In the case of Lazarus, the delay lasted four days. In the case of the blind man the delay lasted from his birth into adulthood.

Why does God delay? That He might be glorified. Let us not forget what the Apostle Paul said in 2 Corinthians 12, “9 And He said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for My strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.”

One other thing important to note here along with God’s glory and His strength in our weakness, there is something that really makes God mad. More often than not, God is slow to anger and abounding in loving kindness (Psalm 103:8). No matter what He is faced with, God is exceedingly patient. Though the earth was filled with violence and nearly all animals and humans had been contaminated genetically, God did immediately send the flood. Though the land of Canaan was filled with evil, He did not immediately wipe them out, but allowed for 400+ years before doing so. But, when we come to Exodus 4 we see what really makes God mad. “10 And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.11 And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD?12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.13 And he said, O my Lord, send, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt send.14 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses…” (emphasis mine)

Let’s not make God mad by listing our weaknesses and all of our reasons why we can’t do something that He wants us to do. “I’m too old.” “I’m too young.” “I haven’t been to Seminary.” “I have too many bills.” “I have an illness.” “I don’t know that language.” “I have children.” “I don’t know the Bible well enough.” Why not choose to just believe that we truly can do all things in Christ who strengthens us? (Philippians 4:13) After all, the empowering of the Holy Spirit is not by our might nor by our power. It’s not by us nor about us. It’s all about Him. It’s all about God fulfilling His promise. It’s all about God getting ALL of the glory.

As God’s Spirit is moving all around the world, let’s not miss it for the world or because we are too preoccupied with work or too worried about any number of things or too busy with nothing that will count for eternity or too fearful of all that seems out of control. It’s time to quit smelling like the dirt of earth, quit wallowing in the muck and mire, quit messing with stuff, and hoping in the things of this life. It is time to start smelling like the incense of heaven, walking in the Spirit, redeeming the time for the days are evil, lifting up our heads for our redemption is drawing near. Let’s not miss what God is doing and is about to do for any reason large or small. Let’s set our minds on things above, not on earthly things (Colossians 3:2). Today is the day. Jesus is coming SOON!! Let’s do this!!!!

If you’ve not yet been empowered by the Holy Spirit, may this day be your day as you seek the Father for His promise that is for all who are far off– and those “far off” includes me and you and this entire generation. The promise is for you. The promise is for now. Why wait any longer?

If you’ve not been freshly filled by the Spirit, if you have been bogged down in this life for a while (Luke 21:34-36), if you have even lost the joy of your salvation (Psalm 51:52), I pray today that you are filled afresh with the Holy Spirit and fire (Acts 13:52; Ephesians 5:18 — In Greek “to be filled” means to be “continuously filled”), and that the joy of your salvation is restored to you and a right spirit renewed within you (Psalm 51:12).

Blessing to you all this Pentecost and BEYOND!!

Empowered from on High,

The Moving of the Holy Spirit In Israel

Even so, the Gospel is being preached at the present time in the streets of Israel by Messianic Rabbi Zev Porat and the ministry team of Messiah of Israel Ministries. As bombs are bursting in air overhead and threats to the lives of Israelis are immanent in the streets, Zev and his team continue to aid the hurting financially as well as spiritually, and many are being saved as never before (videos below). Pastor Zev has been boldly preaching an undiluted message for many years from the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem to the streets of Tel Aviv in spite of intense, Rabbinic opposition.

The Holy Spirit is still moving and speaking through the new converts who have been waiting for an opportunity to share the Gospel and the peace of God through Jesus to their now petrified family and friends. Please, pray for them as they boldly proclaim the truth during this horrific time of growing darkness and impending death.

Bree Keyton of Worshipping Warriors Fellowship

“Bree ministers in power evangelism, with an apostolic/prophetic call, brandishing a sword of steel while exercising the sword of the Spirit. More than a million have been saved, delivered and received physical and emotional healing by the awesome power of God through her ministry. She leads dynamic prayer walk teams, and has a special call to break strongholds over cities, and nations. She leads rescue missions in jungles, travels the world teaching her college courses, and holding conferences and crusades.” Quote from her website: https://www.worshippingwarriorsfellowship.com/index.html

Her interview begins at the 7 minute mark. Before that is a yummy recipe for cheddar cheese quick bread.

Wayne and Denise Dery Sr. of The Plant International

IMG_1551.JPG

“Wayne and Denise are founders of the plant international missions ministry. They plant and build churches in remote areas of Africa where there is little or no gospel message. This successful missions ministry is now building a church ever 30 days and planting a new work ever 60 days on the border of Kenya and Tanzania with the Massai people. Their passion is to win the lost and they truly live the verse, “Unto the uttermost.”

Wayne testifies that “God spoke so clearly to me. He said, “Wayne I want you to plant and build churches in places like this, where they don’t know me. “ God started in my heart that day The Plant International! Two months later we resigned our church and began the process of living God’s dream for our lives. The vision is to plant and build churches in areas where there is little or no gospel message. We are currently planting and building churches in Kenya Africa in the deep bush with the Maasai Tribes. God has blessed us so much. We now have an 11 acre compound in the bush of Majimoto Kenya. We have seen many churches built and miracles abound.” Quotes taken from their website: https://www.theplantintl.org/

The interview of Wayne Dery Sr. begins at approximately the 8 minute and 30 second mark. If you want a great recipe for Hawaiian Chicken salad though, you might want to watch this from the beginning! LOL! 🙂

Evangelist Daniel Chand

Evangelist Daniel Chand of Walking Like Jesus ministries, “…travels the nations preaching and equipping the Saints for the work of the ministry. Prior to accepting Jesus, Daniel was an amateur boxer. Living a life of violence & negativity, later resulted in his arrest and facing an 8-year imprisonment. Whilst Daniel was on bail, he was in a dark place and through his desperation he was told about Jesus. The love of God broke into Daniel’s life and this led to his powerful conversion. Not long after his salvation, Daniel would find people to pray for on the streets just as Jesus did. He began to see the sick healed and people surrendering their lives to Jesus in shopping centres, churches and even in hospitals. Daniel went on to graduate from the Reinhard Bonnke School of Evangelism. It was from this point ‘Walking Like Jesus’ was birthed and Daniel was catapulted into the ministry at the age of 21.” (quote from his youtube channel)

Pastor Sherwood, age 71, was roughly arrested after complaints against him for preaching from Genesis 1 on God creating a man and a woman.

Canadian Pastors

Three pastors —Coates, Pawlowski, and Stephens (Canada)– have been arrested for daring to allow their churches to meet together as commanded by God in Scripture https://holylight4u.wordpress.com/2021/02/22/persecution-pastor-imprisoned-in-canada/. And there are still other Canadian pastors being locked out of their own churches, such as Pastor Hildebrandt and Pastor Reaume, and still others have been recently, heavily fined along with their church members, such as Pastor Reaume. But, they are undaunted and filled with fresh zeal to press on and proclaim. And while others around the world are facing dire persecution, arrest, imprisonment and even death, (https://holylight4u.wordpress.com/worldwide-persecution/ and https://holylight4u.wordpress.com/persecution/ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcCHInA6UMg) the Holy Spirit is still moving, still being poured out, and the Gospel is still being preached boldly and unashamedly.

Pastor Hildebrandt

At about the 14 minute mark he begins to encourage his followers and to speak to the on-lookers. His message is excellent.

Worldwide Evangelism, Signs and Wonders

Andres Bisonni

Andres Bisonni has been holding meetings large and small, far and wide, in nation after nation wherein he preaches the Gospel with signs and wonders following as the Holy Spirit is poured out upon the listeners in attendance (videos below). Though the lockdowns have slowed to a standstill his ability to travel, they have not slowed the move of the Spirit. According to information beneath one of his youtube videos he states, “We are also amazed at how the Lord is using these videos on social media to reach millions of lives all over the world with the gospel. We have been able to reach more lives during this pandemic than ever before! This past month alone we reached over a million people on Facebook with the message of Jesus!”

Phillip Blair and Torch of Christ Ministries

Preacher Phillip Blair of Torch of Christ Ministries takes the Gospel around the world via street preaching, prophetical calls to repentance, prayer, and evangelistic meetings. Even during the lockdowns, he traveled as he and his team were able (videos below) declaring the truth to all who will listen.

“During a night service in a very spiritually dark village in India (huge idols and Hindu temples down the road where they are said to drink human blood), we preached on the power of love and forgiveness in an age where it seems to be more popular to hate and hold grudges.”

**Disclaimer**

Holy Light Ministries does not agree 100% with all ministers represented by the videos above. As with all ministries there are differences of opinion.

For example: The denomination of Pastor Henry Hildebrandt has had a questionable history, questionable past leadership, and all of them dress like they live in another century, but he and his congregation are suffering persecution gracefully and patiently, and he appears to have a sound soteriology — that salvation is through Jesus Christ alone.

Phillip Blair appears to believe that women’s heads need to be covered (because women who are speaking always have their heads covered in his videos), and has an unconventional mode of evangelism for at times he wears sackcloth like the Old Testament prophets and much of the time calls out on a megaphone through the streets, but his heart seems to be about reaching the lost with the Gospel of repentance and salvation through Jesus Christ alone.

Both Sean Feucht and Mario Murillo’s heart appear to be the Gospel, and their signs and wonders appear to be genuinely of the Holy Spirit. However, both are in league with members of the NAR (New Apostolic Reformation). The NAR is a nefarious group whose leaders quote the Bible well, but in the end they do not do what they just said. Furthermore, the NAR attribute ALL signs and wonders to God, forgetting that there are lying signs and wonders too. They teach discernment, but then do not practice it at all. They allow for demonic manifestations (including Kundalini) and say that they are of the Holy Spirit. They also have many prophets and what is called the school of the prophets, but those prophets are never 100% accurate — and in Bill Johnson’s Bethel School of Ministry in order to graduate, one cannot be 100% right, but must be wrong at least 3x. Inaccuracy is dismissed by the group as being normal, for no one can be right all of the time. However, Scripture tells us that if one is prophesying, it is via the Holy Spirit. Thus, no error is possible because the Holy Spirit is never wrong, for He leads us into all truth not error.

Holy Light Ministries does not condone nor endorse the NAR nor the school of the prophets nor all dreamers of dreams. However, neither does Holy Light believe in Cessationism (that signs and wonders have ceased when the Apostles died). Rather, Holy Light believes that both demonic entities and the Holy Spirit are active today through signs, wonders, dreams, visions, and prophetic utterances, and true, Biblically based discernment must be utilized in order to avoid being deceived.

Psalm 23: I Shall Not Want

60% increase in christian persecution, Christs soon return, fear not, He leadeth me beside the still waters, He makes me lie down in green pastures, He restoreth my soul, I shall not want, Jesus' Return, keith green the lord is my shepherd, living water, meat to eat that you known not of, rivers of living water, the bread of life, the good shepherd, the lord is my shepherd

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul…”

Famine and lack is on the brink of breaking out worldwide after 2020 was riddled with locust plagues, record breaking storms that wiped out crops, as well as the man-caused destruction of perfectly good beef cows, chickens, lemons, and other meat sources and produce. And now there are rising meat prices, while the moneyed elite are calling on all to eat lab created meat. On top of that, we are on the brink of world war. Ethnic group is rising in hatred against ethnic group in country after country. Persecution against Christians has risen by 60% worldwide in just the last year of 2020. And then there is the trampling of freedom in nation after nation as overwhelming pressure is being put on their citizens to get the deadly shot, with threats of not being able to travel or shop or go certain places without a vaccine passport or the like. And to add insult to injury, we had a gas crisis on the East Coast of the U.S.

In the midst of all this insanity, what does “I shall not want” mean?

When I was young, my family fell on hard times financially. I don’t recall why, but I do know that we did not have much money. Christmas was small, and we ate many a meal without meat on our plates. Now for American Christians who are used to going to the grocery store whenever they want to, putting Christmas gifts on credit cards and vacationing twice a year or more, what my family went through may seem like “wanting”. But, that assessment would be completely wrong. You see, we had what we needed. We had “our daily bread”, which is all Jesus says to pray for anyway. We had grown a large garden the past summer so that when the unforeseen hard times hit we had plentiful vegetarian bounty. And my Mom had made two delicious pickled treats called “chow-chow” and “dilly beans” that brightened our evening meals. And for Christmas there was the warmth of our wood burning stove, a cup of homemade hot cocoa, fresh popped popcorn in the oiled old pot, and brand new slippers. Now, ordinarily I may not have remembered those slippers, but because of our circumstances, those slippers stand out to me as precious treasure in my memory.

“I Shall Not Want” Does Not Mean…

“I shall not want” does not mean having a new car or a $100+ steak dinner or a leather jacket or a million dollar mansion. And sometimes it doesn’t even mean being able to go to Dairy Queen for a $2 cheeseburger or to McDonalds for a $1 Coke. “I shall not want” does not mean that we will never go through hard times or suffering or loss. James 4:3 states, “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” In other words, we often think we need something when in reality we don’t really need it at all. And we may think that God is not meeting our needs, when really we are a bunch of spoiled brats who are not valuing the plenty that He has already given. We are disgruntled sheep. We are dissatisfied sheep. We are discontent sheep. If the little lambs of God’s fold are always looking for the illusory sweet clover when they want it and for mirages of sunshine and continual happiness, they will always be wandering off without the protection of the Shepherd.

What Does It Really Mean?

What “I shall not want” does mean is that when I go through hard times and suffering and loss and sickness and questions, I will never lack what I really need. As the Apostle Paul says in Philippians 4:4, 11-13, 19, “Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice…11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me…19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

“I shall not want” also means that we will have “meat to eat that you know not of” just like Jesus in John 4 when ministering to the woman at the well. Upon coming to the well, Jesus had been exhausted and very thirsty, and His disciples went into town to buy food because they were hungry. But, after Jesus had spoken with the woman and she had left to tell her town the good news of the Messiah, Jesus was refreshed. It was then that He puzzled His disciples by saying that He had meat to eat that they knew not of, and they wondered if He had snacked on something while they were gone.

This is spiritual food, spiritual treasure. After all, man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God (Matthew 4). Like Jesus said in the Gospel of John, He is the spiritual bread that came down from heaven, the spiritual water that quenches deep thirst so that one ever thirsts again.

In this, we truly shall not want.

Psalm 23 goes on to express the ways in which the LORD makes sure that we do not want.

“He Maketh Me Lie Down In Green Pastures”

Sheep need green pastures.

Historically it has been well-known that sheep will destroy grazing lands by eating the grass down to nothing, root and all. Cattlemen hated sheep on their lands because of this. Sheep do not have a clue when to move on and cannot sniff out better pastures even if they wanted to do so. Though some may wander off, they have no sense of direction. And thus, sheep cannot be left to graze on their own, but must have a shepherd to guide them. The shepherd will direct them to other grazing land when it is time to do so, and he’ll know because he’s paying attention to the needs of the sheep.

When in those lovely lush grazing lands, sheep will not rest or stretch out on the ground unless they feel safe, healthy, and are content and at peace with one another. If the sheep are being harassed by bullies among them, are ill or unkempt with dirty, itchy heads and weeds sticking in their fleecy backs and their hooves untrimmed, or they are not happy with their food, they will not lie down nor be at rest. Instead, they will be restless and unhappy. Even in the lushest of fields, unless these issues are addressed, the sheep will not be content.

The verb “maketh me lie down” that is used here in the Hebrew is Hiphil Imperfect which is a causative verbal form wherein someone or something is causing another to do something. This means that the shepherd in Psalm 23 is causing the sheep to lie down. It means “to stretch out, to lie stretched out.”

Does this mean the shepherd is literally forcing each lamb to lie down whether they want to or not? No. Rather, it is the presence of the shepherd that “causes” them to stretch out in peace and security, for he disciplines the bullies; he cleans each one of them up; he lovingly, consistently leads them time and again to food that will nourish them. The shepherd is the reason for the restfulness of the sheep. The shepherd is the cause. Thus, because of the shepherd‘s presence and love and attentiveness, the sheep are in perfect peace.

“He Leadeth Me Beside The Still Waters”

Rushing water is dangerous for sheep. It’s not that they cannot cross a stream. It’s that they shouldn’t. There is a BIG difference between cannot and should not. They should not cross because if their fleece gets saturated the water will weigh them down, which will in turn throw them off balance and will cause them to drown.

On top of this, most sheep are afraid of the sound of rushing water. Does the sound hurt their ears? Do they just know instinctively to stay away because they could drown? No one fully knows. But, a good shepherd will lead them to quiet, still waters. And sometimes this has meant that a shepherd will dig alongside a creek or river until quiet pools of water form for the sheep to drink from safely and without fear.

The verb in this case for “leadeth” (5095) is a Piel Imperfect Hebrew verb, which means that the definition is intensified and is often a repeated action. According to Chaim Bentorah “a Piel imperfect form…is a continuing process”. And thus, the shepherd leads the sheep and keeps on successfully leading them to still waters. This is not a one time thing. It is continual, and it is intensive.

Not only this, but the word itself means “to lead or guide to a watering place, bring to a place of rest, refresh”. Thus, the Shepherd is not just going in front of them, but is leading them to a place of refreshment and restoration. Just as Jesus said to the woman at the well, He is that place of refreshing; He is that living water that we can drink of and thirst no more (John 4).

Incredibly, Jesus is this living water, the likes of which the world cannot comprehend. He is the One who quenches the thirst of my soul. He is the One whose Holy Spirit bubbles up from deep inside of me even when persecution looms, evil attacks, life is hard, health is poor, and my finances are low. He is my source of life – the living water that will never, ever run dry!!

“He Restoreth My Soul”

The Hebrew word for “restoreth” actually means “to return,” “to turn back,” “to repent,” and is often used of God’s people after they have wandered away from Him. He calls them “to return”, to be restored to Him. Furthermore, this verb is Piel imperfect again, an intense continuous verb, expressing that shepherd cares so much for each individual lamb that He very much and completely restores them to the fold, even over and over as necessary.

Why does a lamb need to be turned back, returned, restored? Because they wander off. Because some are prone to doing their own thing. This can lead to the shepherd breaking a leg of the continuously wandering lamb so that it learns to quit wandering off. After breaking its leg, the shepherd will carry the lamb on its shoulders, and while the lamb’s leg is mending, the shepherd and lamb will bond. When it is set back on its feet again, the lamb will usually remain close to the shepherd like a loyal puppy dog.

Reflections

Jesus is my Good Shepherd. The God of the universe, Creator of all, the One who dwells between the cherubim, Savior of the world, the soon and coming King, is my Shepherd. Because Jesus is my Shepherd, I shall not want. Even in hard times, I shall not want. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Whether living in abundance or in hard economic times, the Lord provides for all my needs according to His riches, not mine. He is my rest. He is my peace. Because of my Shepherd, I lie down in safety; I am cared for and loved; and all the flock is minstered to in just the way each individually needs it. Because of my Shepherd, I am refreshed with the eternal water springing up from the Holy Spirit deep inside of me. Because of my Shepherd, my soul is restored, for when I wander, when I get a little lost, He comes after me and draws me close and gives me life and life more abundantly. I shall not want because my Shepherd makes me safe, He gives me rest, He is my peace, the one who continually leads me to refreshing waters, and continually restores me to fellowship with Him amid His flock.

Why are we limiting our good Shepherd? Why are we so fearful of what is in the news, of what is coming, of being alone or loneliness or both, of what man is doing, of pandemics, of losing our jobs, persecution, death — fear of any and everything under the sun? Is our God so small, so limited, so unable to care for us — the very ones that He made?

I want to remind you as a fellow lamb, Jesus is your Shepherd. He cares for you! He knows what you have need of before you ever ask Him or even need it yourself. When each of us stays close to the Shepherd, we will not lack spiritual sustenance nor physical necessity nor redemption.

As the end of the age draws to a close, let us not scatter upon the mountains or fearfully wander but instead, draw near to our Shepherd for protection. Let us not willfully think that we are lions instead of lambs and charge ahead without our Shepherd, our protector. Though we may lose all — all possessions, all family, all finances, our homes, our dreams — Jesus is coming soon, and He is calling us lay it all down and to take up our crosses and follow Him. He was the Lamb of God who came as the bread of life, the living water, the redeemer of our souls, and we are the sheep of His hand. Fear not, little lamb. The Shepherd loves you, and His return is immanent.

Before 2020 ever came through the door of our lives, each of us was already facing challenges, overwhelming odds, loneliness, financial pressures, injustice, unfairness, depression, anxiety, illnesses, surgeries, divorce, abuse, as well as good things like hopes, expectations, dreams, etc. And then 2020 came upon upon us like a slow rolling tidal wave, and Christians along with the world looked on in perplexity. When the truth hit, it hit harder than the lie, and on top of every other trial of this life the end of the world coupled with a great delusion veiling the eyes of so many including other Christians, family members and friends hit us right between the eyes. Many felt stranded and alone. Single moms and dads were even more alone than before, and children already overwhelmed by insecurities were bombarded by emotional upheaval. Depression and suicide rates sky rocketed across around the world as tensions rose at home among those in lockdown.

What about now? Have Christians recovered from the COVID madness? Have the children? The CDC is still stirring up confusion over masks, children and vaccines, social distancing, the return to normal, and the like. Confusion still reigns, and the news media still propagates an atmosphere of fear. And adults trying to cope with it all, are seeking refuge on some far away beach (vaccine or no vaccine) or another vacation destination. Still others escape into the make-believe world of a movie or tv show or a new relationship online or next door or become immersed in a home improvement project.

But is that the right response? An attempt to get away? What does God’s word say?

In short, here is the story. Each of us is equated with a lamb surrounded by trouble on every side, the enemy at every turn, going through frightening things we don’t understand and don’t want to face and going down paths we’d rather not walk, just trying to survive. In other words, there is nothing new in what we are going through today, for the enemy of our soul still wants to chew us up and spit us out, like a wolf with a lamb. But, there are two kinds of lambs: those who wander off and get lost in search of a vacation to revive them or a wonder drug to make them feel better or a new relationship to make them whole, and then there are those lambs who follow the shepherd wherever he goes. Though some recently have been saying we’re no longer lambs but are lions, no where in Scripture are we ever called lions. No where. We are always referred to as lambs.

Psalm 23 is one of the most if not the most popular and well-known of all the Psalms. Its beautiful poetic rhythm has captured hearts worldwide, and its gentle, pastoral scene has inspired generations of those who have memorized its lines. However, though many have memorized it, not many understand it or have thought about it, and though many have heard sermons on it, not many have have thought about the fact that is comes from a lamb’s perspective. A lamb.

Since we are equated to lambs, let’s take a fresh look at this powerful psalm.

Psalm 23

“1 (A Psalm of David.) The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.”

What is a Lamb?

Since each of us is like lamb, it is important to know what that means. After all, what is a lamb? Have you ever thought about lambs?

A lamb is a herd animal. A lamb is defenseless against any and all predators for it has no sharp teeth or roar like a lion, no claws like a cat, no spray like a skunk, no quills like a porcupine, no tusks like an elephant, no bark or growl like a dog, no fangs like a wolf, no strong kick like a cow, no horns like a bull. They are not stealthy. They are not wise. A lamb cannot scratch its back or its head nor clean its bottom. A lamb cannot shew away flies or other bugs. A lamb does not find shelter on its own. A lamb will fall over a cliff as it blindly follows the herd. A lamb will trample another lamb unknowingly when fear overtakes the herd and a stampede ensues. A lamb can easily drown if it falls into water for it cannot swim and its wool becomes a sponge for the water. A lamb will eat grass down to nothing without ever thinking that it could go to new pasture. Much like a newborn human baby, a lamb is completely and helplessly dependent upon its shepherd to do almost everything for it.

What is a Shepherd?

This being the case about lambs and before we can proceed forward in our quest to understand Psalm 23, we must establish who the incredibly important shepherd is. To begin with, there are hirelings and there are shepherds. A hireling is one who is hired to watch the sheep. Like employees today they work for money, and their ambition is to earn that money. Jesus speaks of such in John 10 wherein He explains that a hireling will abandon the sheep when hard times come or an enemy threatens or something catastrophic looms. A hireling does not love the sheep nor does he/she care for the sheep, for the sheep are merely a means of monetary gain. A shepherd on the other hand, is not there merely for the money but for the sheep. Thus, a shepherd will not abandon the sheep at any time for any reason, for the sheep are their number one priority.

Amazingly, in the evenings a good shepherd herds their flock into a sheepfold made up of fencing or the confines of a cave. But, this temporary protection has no wooden door nor gate. Instead, the shepherd stations himself/herself as the door of the pen. Thus, Jesus says in John 10 that He is the door, He is the good shepherd, and no one but His own sheep enter in to the protection of His dwelling.

Who is MY Shepherd?

Psalm 23 is specific as to who each lamb’s shepherd is: The Lord. The Lord is MY shepherd. This is deeply personal and intimate. He is not just someone else’s shepherd or the herd’s shepherd. He is mine. Which means, He cares for me; He watches over me; He is dedicated to me. He is not somewhere far away, but nearby and involved with me.

Not only is He mine, He is Yehovah. He is not just my lord (Adonai) or my provider or my defender, He is Yaweh or Yehovah. The meaning of this name is found in its root as used in Exodus 3:14 when God tells Moses His name is “I am that I am.” He is the One who is, was, and is to come. He is the self-existent, eternal One, and as such is all that I need.

In case there is any question regarding this, Psalm 80 clearly points out that our Shepherd is God Himself. After all, who but God dwells between the cherubim? “Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; thou that dwellest between the cherubims, shine forth.2 Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh stir up thy strength, and come and save us.3 Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.” First Samuel 4:4; 2 Kings 19:15; Psalm 99:1; Isaiah 37:16 are a few other passages that state God Almighty is the One who sits/dwells between the cherubim.

Reflections

Yaweh-Yehovah God who dwells between the cherubim is my Shepherd. He is the One who is watching over me, not because He has to, not because He is paid to, but because He wants to do so, because He loves me. I have a Shepherd who loves me. You have a Shepherd who loves you. Not only this, but He is love itself (1 John 4:8, 16), and thus, will never run out of love or patience for that matter, because “love is patient” (I Corinthians 13).

I have a Shepherd who knows my name. You have a Shepherd who knows you by name. You are not just a number. You are not known by your mother or dad’s name. You are not known by the flaws of your relations. You are not known by what others in your family have done or not done, by their goodness or their badness. You are known for you alone, by your name.

I known my Shepherd’s voice, and so do you. No matter how busy we are, may we never grow dull to His still small voice. Nothing can drown it out. Nothing can silence it. No one can stifle it. Except you, if you do not stay in tune. His voice rings loud and clear in our ears and in our spirit. His voice is shouting to us over the noise, whispering to us in the pain, empowering us in spite of fear. His voice is heard in His Word and through the discernment of His Spirit, if we will read, and if we will listen. Have you read today? Have you listened today?

I have a Shepherd who has not, is not and will not abandon me, ever. He does not flee when dangers come, nor did He seek to save His own life from the wolves. He does not stand aloof from the sheep thinking Himself higher and better and distant. Instead(John 10:10), He laid down His life for me. He laid down His life for you, that we might have life and life more abundantly , that our life might be found in Him (Colossians 3:3).

The LORD God Almighty, Maker of the Universe, Creator of all that is living, the Awesome and Great Eternal God is my Shepherd, is your Shepherd. Why then do we fear when we listen to the nightly news or notice the signs of the times or are going through various trials and griefs? Why then do we cower when a virus or spiritual warfare or persecution is lurking; why do we seek to preserve our lives? Why do we wander off alone in depression and doubt and incredulity?

Our Shepherd is Jesus. Even if the rest of Psalm 23 were never read or memorized, wouldn’t that be enough to still my stormy heart, my raging sea, my overwhelming odds, my family crisis, my medical emergency, my need to succeed, my employment problem, my anything and everything? My Shepherd is God. What else, what Goliath, is bigger than that????

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:35-39.
